Little House in the Big Woods

David Gan

The book A Little House in the Big Woods is about a little girl's life in the big woods of Wisconsin. There are no neighbors within several kilometers and only friends and family come to visit them. Laura's father has to work very hard to assure that each day Laura's family does not go hungry. Their family is neither poor nor rich. What impresses me the most is that there is no plot nor solution in this story and yet it is still a pretty good book. It is not written in the form of a journal or diary but in the form of a chapter book which I find very intriguing. The book basically tells one year of a little girl’s life. Her name is Laura. She has an older sister named Mary and a younger sister whose name is Carrie. This book also demonstrates the importance of inventions we take for granted. For example as the book is situated in the late 1700's there were no light bulbs or electricity. Laura's family had candles and did not depend on electricity to power their home. Think about it. How many times do we use light bulbs or electricity in a day? We get up from bed turn on the lights. You use the toaster for breakfast. To eat breakfast you turn on the lights. I could go on and on and on and there would still be scenarios that I'd miss. The point is that Laura and her family didn't have access to the kind of things we have now yet they still managed to live a happy and cheerful life. If we too did not use electricity or any form of energy or if we did not have access we have today would we be able to survive for a week? A year? A lifetime? I very much doubt it. That is why one of the most important things that I learned from reading this book is that while technology has advanced most of us have forgotten the ways of the past. This book also shows how far mankind has come and how much we depend on technology to keep us going. I would definitely recommend this book and I think I would give it a 7.5 out of 10.

Little House in the Big Woods

Silas Ng

Little House in the Big Woods是一个故事书。

Little House in the Big Woods

Lemuel Ng

Little House in the Big Woods is quite an interesting book. There are funny parts like when the sled crashes in the pig and serious places where pa gets angry and dangerous parts when ma slaps the bear. There are good things about the story too. Like how they split parts like the stories in the book, how does the author think about that stuff? And the characters like Laura, Mary, Pa and Ma. But there are also more people like baby Carrie, grandpa and grandma, Uncle George, Aunt Docia and Aunt Ruby, Caroline, Uncle James, etc. It’s very good series. Although Garth Williams is a famous person, it’s still a good book!

A Hard but Happy Life

A book report of Little House in The Big Woods

Darren Lu

The book “Little house in the big woods” is written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It is about the life of a pioneer family that lived in the woods 100 years ago. After reading this book, I like to imagine what would be like to have a house in the middle of a big woods. If I get to rate this book, I will choose a 10 out of 10!!!

A long time ago, a little girl named Laurie lived in a house in the big woods of Wisconsin. Laurie’s family included a mother, a father, her older sister (Mary)and her baby sister (Carrie). There were rarely any houses in the woods. Instead, there were lots of wolves, bears and other types of animals. During peaceful time, you would often hear wolf howls. In this house, there were a lot of chores to do. Pa often used a harpoon to hunt for meat. Laurie and Mary had lived in the woods for their entire lives. So they did not know what it was like in town. However their father always told them his stories in the town when he traded fur with a storekeeper. During bedtime, Pa would play a song on his fiddle until Laurie and Mary would go to sleep.

On Christmas holiday, Aunt Eliza and Uncle Peter and the three cousins came to spend Christmas with them. With the two families combined, that Christmas was fantastic. On Christmas day, Pa used a lot of materials to make Laurie a real doll and she got so excited for just getting a single real doll and there was not a single bit of jealousy. So I think they were really well mannered and generous. Although they got only a few presents, they were very thankful and happy. Christmas comes but only once a year.

When the kids grew older, Laurie’s entire family went to town for the first time to trade fur for some very unique and useful things such as calico and candy. On the way back, they would go to a nice and peaceful river nearby. Laurie and Mary went to pick some pretty pebbles that were smoothed by the current for years. This was my favourite part because I could just imagine how glad and joyful they were, living in the woods all the time.

At that time, people had to work very hard to live. Ma and pa had to hunt, make cheese, sew and take care of Mary, Laurie and baby Carrie. They enjoyed living in the forest. They enjoyed their meals. This was their life. None of them could think of anything better.Be glad of what you have and don’t be too greedy, and life will be joyful.

The Giver

Silas Ng

The book The Giver is a fiction book by Lois Lowry. It has won first for the John Newbery Medal and was published in 1993. The book is about a boy named Jonas and he lives in a community where there is no injustice, unemployment, conflict, poverty, starvation, and choice. The people cannot see color and each family has two males and two females.

The story is about a boy named Jonas who is to become the next Receiver which is a person who holds the memories of good and bad. At the Ceremony of the Twelve Jonas with the Twelves receive their life assignments. He is destined to be the next Receiver. He starts his training right away and is bestowed the memories of the current Receiver. He sees memories of fun and joy and memories of death and sadness. One day he finds out that the baby they are taking care of is going to be released. His dad tells him it means the baby will be sent elsewhere. That day he asks the Giver(the name of the Receiver) what is a release. Giver shows him a video and he finds out he has been lied to! A release is really a killing with a poisonous syringe. So Jonas escapes with the baby called Gabriel and with Giver's help they escape! They sleep by day and bike at night until they are far off. And they get to elsewhere!

I really liked the book and it shows that no place in the world is perfect. Some parts are funny like the smack and snack story. Some parts are sad like the murder of the weak, disabled, old and slow to progress. Overall it was a great story and I would recommend it.
